Make this your best year yet!

How many times are you so excited about the change(s) which you are resolving to make in the ‘New Year’?   How many times have you said to yourself (and most probably to eager listeners around you), “this time, for sure, I just know that this is when it will change, when I will make it work, when it will ‘all come together’”?.  So now that the year is well underway, what is different?  How much of what you firmly promised yourself has come about?  For a few, there will already be remarkable changes, with results flying in the door on a daily basis; but, for many, ‘life just got in the way’ and the enthusiasm wore off, the justifications for the absence of life looking a little different seems to come flowing, and there it goes, let’s wait and see what the year will bring. If this sounds familiar, be assured that you are not alone.  How can I say that? because that’s exactly how the pattern for several years looked like in my own life.  If fact, this is one of the reasons I absolutely love New Years and am not such a huge fan of the whole Christmas fuss, (apart from seeing my Daughter’s face light up when she’s opening her presents). So, does it look any different now?  Yes, and the reason for this is because I have come to realize, after journals upon journals of ‘goal setting’, visualizations of new creations, day dreaming of new projects, and enthusiastic lip-service to the new and the better, that these great ideas and grand gestures mean absolutely nothing unless FOLLOWED UP BY TAKING POSITIVE STEPS TOWARDS BRINGING THEM INTO REALITY. Sounds simple really, but when putting into practice it can very easily get put ‘on the back burner’, on the shelf to be dealt with later, will get to it after dealing with the ‘urgent’ day to day ‘stuff’, shoved lower down on the list of priorities. Then, no sooner have you brought it back into your thoughts, a couple of months of the year have already passed and it no longer feels ‘fresh and exciting’ and so we settle for the status quo, and make amends to ‘set a new target’ for the new year……and so the cycle goes on another journey, same surroundings, but with another year older. So what will it take to change this ‘groundhog day-style’ living? Yes, do the whole ‘journalling goal-setting’ idea.  Actually physically writing INTENTIONS and GOALS can solidify the process and connect the mind and the body. MAKE YOUR GOALS SOMEWHAT REALISTIC.  This is important and could be the difference between dreaming and achieving.  We’re all familiar by now with the theory behind ‘the secret’ where you ‘Imagine it then it comes true’, so we head down all sorts of routes in our wildest dreams, only to be disappointed and disillusioned when it doesn’t magically appear.  When I say ‘Relistic’, that also doesn’t mean that you can’t go beyond the ‘norm’ of what you have allowed yourself up to this point.  So, let’s put it into context.  Say you are a dress size16 and you set yourself the goal of reaching  a size 6 in 3 months.  Not only is this an unhealthily speedy weight loss, which could result in severe health issues, but an incredibly unlikely scenario too, which results in a feeling of ‘failure’ and disappointment.  So, in this scenario, a ‘realistic’ goal would be to reach a size 14 within 4-6 moths, (for example).  Not only is it a healthier option, increasing the chances of it lasting, but a much more ‘doable’ goal with which to FOLLOW UP BY TAKING POSITIVE STEPS TOWARDS BRINGING IT INTO REALITY.  Taking just one tiny step per day can, over time, create astonishing results, without appearing like a huge burden or challenge if left untapped. So, whether it’s reducing your waistline by a few Knotches, learning a new language, setting up a new business or increasing productivity in your current one, then making a commitment to take one tiny step per day towards that which you want will make the difference between ‘leaving it to -’see what happens’, or living the life you really want. We are always faced with choices , every day, every moment to an extent, so when faced with a choice, ask this question,  ”Is this going to lead me closer to that which I want to create, or is it taking me further away”?, then let your answer be the lead.
